Scientists have discovered a disturbing new way plastic pollution is impacting marine life: it's melting directly into coral fragments. This phenomenon, dubbed "plasticoral," was observed on Japan's Ryukyu Islands, where plastic polymers were found fused with coral skeletons.
The discovery was made during a survey on Okinawa, where researchers noticed small, colorful specks embedded in coral gravel on three different beaches. Lab analysis confirmed these were polymers from common household plastics, which had melted into the microscopic pores of the coral skeletons, making them inseparable.
This isn't the first time plastic has become intertwined with the natural world, but previous instances, like "plastiskin" found on mussels and algae, involved non-living surfaces. "Plasticoral" is significant because coral rubble, even after washing ashore, plays a vital role in reef ecosystems by providing a foundation for new coral growth and shelter for marine organisms.
The exact impact of plasticorals on living corals remains unknown, but prior research suggests chemicals leaching from plastics can hinder coral reproduction, and plastic fragments can carry pathogens. Scientists are still investigating how the fusion occurs, with beach bonfires considered a likely culprit due to the high temperatures required to melt plastic, even with rising ocean temperatures and UV radiation playing potential roles.
Given the widespread nature of plastic pollution, researchers believe this fusion could be happening in other seemingly untouched areas, especially where bonfires are present. Further studies are needed to confirm the prevalence and full ecological consequences of this alarming new form of pollution.
