Turkish giants Galatasaray are reportedly plotting an ambitious move for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, aiming to bolster their defense amid struggles this season.
The Turkish champions have experienced defensive inconsistencies, including a significant 4-0 loss to Trabzonspor in September, prompting them to prioritize defensive reinforcements when the January transfer window opens.
According to Fotomac, Galatasaray is reviving their long-standing interest in Van Dijk, who has reportedly been on their radar for about two years. While a January deal is desired, Liverpool's potential reluctance to lose their captain mid-season might push any serious negotiations toward the summer.
Van Dijk's current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, potentially allowing him to engage with overseas clubs from January. He signed his most recent contract extension in April 2025, committing his future beyond the 2024-25 campaign and remains a key leader under manager Andoni Iraola.
Adding another layer, former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah recently moved to Trabzonspor, meaning Van Dijk could potentially reunite with his ex-teammate in Turkish football should Galatasaray's plans materialize.
For Liverpool, the situation raises concerns about losing another senior leader. While Van Dijk, even at 35, remains a commanding presence, the departures of Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konaté this past summer have amplified his responsibility within a reshaped squad. Liverpool has officially designated Alisson, Joe Gomez, and Dominik Szoboszlai as part of the leadership group supporting Van Dijk.
A January sale seems unlikely unless Van Dijk himself seeks a move. The more significant decision looms next summer. If Galatasaray presents a substantial contract offer and Van Dijk is open to a new challenge, Turkey could become a viable option.
