Iran Security Chief Warns of Unprecedented Economic Crisis

Iran's national security adviser has stated that the country is experiencing one of the most challenging periods in its history due to a rapidly deteriorating economy.

Mohsen Rezaei, the nation's top security official, made this candid admission during a high-level government meeting focused on economic stabilization, occurring over seven months into the ongoing conflict. The Iranian rial has seen a significant depreciation since February, with the decline accelerating sharply in recent weeks following intensified U.S. sanctions and a naval blockade. These measures have increased import costs and exacerbated a persistent cost of living crisis that previously led to widespread protests.

Analysts suggest that the U.S. naval blockade has severely hampered Iran's oil exports, its primary revenue source, leading to a critical fuel shortage. Recent reports indicate that public sector employees, including nurses and teachers, have publicly announced their resignation due to insufficient salaries. Retired government employees have also reportedly protested non-receipt of their full pensions.

The meeting on Saturday included President Masoud Pezeshkian and several senior ministers. While direct quotations from Mr. Rezaei were not provided by state media, the official news agency IRNA reported that he characterized the situation as "among the most difficult periods the country has faced" and pledged support from Iran's security council.

President Pezeshkian acknowledged the worsening economic conditions in a social media statement, announcing a "new posture" to manage the crisis, though specific details were not elaborated. The economic strain on Iran coincides with stalled negotiations between Tehran and Washington, where neither side appears willing to concede, signaling a prolonged period of economic pressure.

U.S. officials have asserted their success in the economic standoff, with recent data indicating a near-prewar level of oil shipments from the Middle East. However, oil prices remain elevated, and analysts caution that the broader economic crisis is far from resolved. Navigational hazards in the region and damage to energy infrastructure continue to affect refining capacity and natural gas exports. Some analysts suggest Iran's leadership hopes this economic pressure could influence upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

In addition to the naval blockade, the U.S. has restricted most civilian air travel to and from Iran, further isolating the country economically. Experts in sanctions have expressed concerns that this isolation could impede critical imports, including essential medicines.
