A fugitive wanted in Iowa for alleged involvement in a 2012 kidnapping and arson has been apprehended in San Diego, where he had been living and working as a chef under an assumed identity for over ten years.
The U.S. Marshals Service arrested the individual, identified as Brian Anthony Williams, 50, on Tuesday. Authorities allege that Williams, using the alias Troy Williams, had been charged in Iowa with kidnapping, assault, conspiracy, and first-degree arson in connection with an incident in October 2012. In that case, a woman, reportedly his girlfriend, was allegedly shot and abandoned in a field. Williams was also subsequently charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Williams had reportedly gained local recognition as an up-and-coming chef at Miss B's Coconut Club in Mission Beach, a Caribbean restaurant. A feature published earlier this year in the Times of San Diego highlighted his narrative of overcoming adversity and racial profiling to achieve success in the culinary industry. However, the U.S. Marshals Service stated that much of the identity he presented, including his name, appears to have been fabricated.
U.S. Marshal Ted Kamatchus of the Southern District of Iowa commented in a news release that the arrest demonstrates that those who believe they have evaded law enforcement can eventually be brought to justice. The U.S. Marshals Service reportedly became aware of Williams' whereabouts and assumed identity last month, potentially due to his public visibility in local media.
Management and staff at Miss B's Coconut Club expressed shock upon learning of Williams' true identity. Eddie Jurado, the general manager, who has worked at the restaurant for over ten years, stated that Williams had been the head chef for a significant portion of that time. Pete Cich, managing partner of the restaurant, issued a statement conveying that the arrest has been deeply unsettling and extended thoughts to those harmed by the events described by authorities.
Williams is awaiting extradition to Iowa. The Times of San Diego appended an editor's note to its earlier profile, confirming that the arrested individual, identified as Brian Anthony Williams, was allegedly living under the false identity of Troy Williams, the head chef at the Mission Beach establishment.
