Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed legislative elections, originally slated for November 28, to September 11, 2027, citing Israeli "obstacles" as the primary reason. A presidential election will also be held on the same date.

The decree, announced on Saturday by official Palestinian news agency Wafa, confirms widespread speculation that the elections, the first since 2006, would be delayed again. The Palestinian leadership stated that the postponement was due to "obstacles imposed by Israeli measures... as well as the need to create appropriate political, security and on-the-ground conditions."

Israel, which is scheduled to hold its own elections on October 27, has denied these accusations. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar dismissed Abbas's claims as "another ridiculous lie designed to evade responsibility and accountability." The Palestinian Authority had previously stated that Israel refused to grant access to election officials in East Jerusalem and Gaza, which Israel denies.

The decision to postpone has drawn criticism from various Palestinian factions. Mohammed Dahlan, head of a splinter group from Abbas's Fatah party, condemned the delay as a "crime against democracy." Conversely, some analysts, like journalist Esmat Mansour, suggest that internal Palestinian politics and a fear of electoral outcomes may also be contributing factors, arguing that Israeli restrictions were known when the elections were initially scheduled.

Palestinian analyst Ghassan al-Khatib, however, agreed with the official Palestinian assessment, stating that Israel's actions have created conditions not conducive to holding elections. He pointed to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israeli military operations and settler violence in the West Bank as significant deterrents.

Holding new elections has been a key demand of the international community, including the European Union, as part of broader reforms for the Palestinian Authority. The last legislative elections in 2006 resulted in a victory for Hamas over Fatah, leading to a significant political rift and factional infighting. The Palestinian Legislative Council has not convened since 2007.
