Pope Leo Urges Yemen Ceasefire, Expresses Concern for Taiz

Pope Leo has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Yemen, expressing deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis, particularly in the city of Taiz. The appeal comes less than two weeks after the Pontiff underwent surgery for lung cancer.

Addressing the faithful from the window overlooking St. Peter's Square, the 71-year-old Pope specifically highlighted the dire situation in Taiz, a southwestern Yemeni city where the population is suffering from severe shortages of food, water, and medical assistance.

The Pontiff, who appeared and smiled to the assembled crowds, waved and smiled to the crowds after reaching the window unaided, delivered his message in a firm and clear voice. He stated, "I'm making a heartfelt appeal for the hostilities to stop, so that the people in Yemen and across the entire region can live in peace." This address follows his public announcement on October 11th regarding his upcoming surgery to remove a growth on his lung, marking a significant health event during his papacy.

Furthermore, Pope Leo offered prayers for the victims of a terrorist attack on an Orthodox church in Jordan on Friday. He conveyed his closeness to the affected community and to Jordan, a nation recognized for its peaceful coexistence of different religions.

The Pope also encouraged prayers for a forthcoming meeting of religious leaders in Assisi, Italy, aimed at promoting peace. He had been scheduled to attend this event but cancelled his visit on medical advice to facilitate his recovery. The Vatican had previously announced that the Pope underwent surgery on October 13th to remove the lower lobe of his right lung due to adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. Doctors have since indicated that his tumor had not spread and further therapy is not required.
