Al-Jubouli's Removal Rekindles Local Resistance in Al-Maqaterah

The recent military advancements in the Al-Maqaterah front of Lahj province signify more than just territorial gains against the Houthi militia; they reflect a shift in local community sentiment towards the conflict, following leadership changes in the Tor Al-Bahah axis and the removal of Abubakr Al-Jubouli. His tenure was reportedly marked by a widening trust deficit between the forces and the residents.

Government forces and popular resistance fighters recaptured the Al-Jedad area, including Tabbat Al-Khazan, on Tuesday during intense clashes with the Houthi militia. The fighting has since advanced towards the Al-Nasirah area and is nearing the outskirts of Al-Ashbout. Local sources indicate a surge in popular mobilization and readiness among the people of Al-Maqaterah to confront Houthi expansion.

The significance of this shift lies in the fact that Al-Maqaterah was not lacking in popular desire to resist the Houthis. Instead, it suffered from a profound crisis of confidence with the forces previously led by Al-Jubouli, who was associated with the Islah Party. Residents cited years of practices under his command that burdened them, including arbitrary arrests, home raids, extortions on roads, and other forms of harassment and violations.

Activists believe these practices contributed to widespread public alienation, making many hesitant to engage in confrontations or support Al-Jubouli's forces. They feared their participation would legitimize a military authority they did not trust, rather than genuinely defend their regions and interests.

Local civil activist Abdulhalim Sabr stated that the changes in the Tor Al-Bahah axis leadership were widely welcomed by the community, evidenced by the people's eagerness to join the frontlines and participate in liberating the district. He emphasized that the obstacle was not a lack of resistance will, but rather the trust deficit accumulated by the previous leadership with the local population.

He added that current developments highlight the importance of rebuilding the relationship between the forces and the community, and unifying military efforts away from partisan considerations. This approach will allow for the effective mobilization of popular readiness against the Houthis. Government forces in Al-Maqaterah are receiving support from the Al-Subeihah forces led by Ghubs, the National Resistance forces operationally linked to the Haifan front, and the Shield of the Homeland forces on the Ma'baq front.

These developments underscore that leadership changes can do more than just rearrange military positions; they can directly impact the level of public trust and cooperation, which are crucial factors in the Al-Maqaterah conflict. A citizen who has lost faith in the forces cannot be swayed by slogans alone, whereas the restoration of trust opens the door to broader and more cohesive popular resistance against the Houthis.
