Defender Marco Palestra has candidly stated he has significant work to do after a challenging initial period at Chelsea, acknowledging the need for personal improvement to achieve success with the club.
The 21-year-old Italian joined Chelsea from Atalanta in the summer, marking the first signing under manager Xabi Alonso. However, injuries hampered his debut, delaying his competitive start until Chelsea's recent 2-0 victory over Manchester United, a performance that attracted some criticism regarding his defensive positioning.
Despite the early hurdles, Palestra remains a highly-rated prospect at Stamford Bridge. Reflecting on his transfer, he expressed his happiness at becoming a Chelsea player, a dream he held since childhood, but stressed his current focus on elevating his game.
Chelsea invested approximately £45 million in securing Palestra, who signed a substantial six-year deal with an option for an additional season. The club moved swiftly to secure his signature amidst reported interest from rivals Liverpool and Tottenham.
Palestra's first few months haven't unfolded as planned, partly due to an early-season injury that disrupted his adaptation. Manager Xabi Alonso has previously noted Palestra's frustration but affirmed that opportunities would come once he was fully fit, highlighting the defender's valued qualities like versatility, physical strength, and mentality.
Given his limited game time and a single difficult Premier League start, judging the 21-year-old now would be premature. Chelsea acquired Palestra for his long-term potential, and with continued fitness and adaptation to the Premier League's intensity, his Serie A-proven abilities are expected to shine through.
