European Leaders Vow Unity on Defence Ahead of NATO Summit

European leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a strengthened defence partnership in the lead-up to the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, signaling a unified front following recent diplomatic tensions and internal disagreements.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, hosting leaders from Britain, France, Italy, and Poland in Berlin, emphasized that the NATO summit on July 7-8 presents a critical opportunity to demonstrate Europe's resolve in assuming a more prominent leadership role in defence matters. "We want to renew the Alliance. We are strengthening its European pillar," Merz stated, underscoring the collective intention to bolster European contributions to collective security.

A joint declaration issued by the leaders affirmed "their unwavering commitment to Euro-Atlantic security and the transatlantic bond." This statement of solidarity comes amidst recent challenges, including the dissolution of the long-delayed Franco-German Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project due to strategic and management disputes, highlighting the complexities of collaborative defence initiatives as the United States under President Donald Trump has shown a wavering commitment to NATO.

The meeting in Berlin also addressed underlying tensions exacerbated by recent U.S. criticisms of NATO's support for the U.S.-led operations in Iran and threats of troop withdrawals from Europe. Furthermore, disagreements had surfaced among European capitals, with some questioning the extent to which the E3 group (Germany, France, and Britain) has involved other nations in discussions concerning Ukraine.

Chancellor Merz, while not directly confronting the specific points of contention, stressed the imperative of reinforcing a unified European approach to defence, coupled with a robust partnership with the United States. "We are travelling this path together," he remarked, cautioning that "Unilateral national actions in our defence policy would be a mistake." He indicated plans to brief President Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and other international partners on the discussions held in Berlin.

The leaders also extended warm tributes to outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, acknowledging his efforts to mend ties with Europe post-Brexit. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented, "Thanks to your work, it was possible to forget about Brexit for a moment. I will remember that for a long time."
