Hesperia Lake Park in San Bernardino County is abuzz with excitement following the recent capture of a colossal catfish, with local anglers reporting that an even larger, legendary fish known as "Catzilla" remains in the lake's depths.
On Sunday, angler Javier Fuentes landed a catfish weighing approximately 30 pounds, a specimen so large it reportedly "broke the scale." Fuentes, a dedicated fisherman, often frequents Hesperia Lake, but this catch significantly surpassed his previous best efforts. Photos shared by the Hesperia Recreation and Park District depict Fuentes holding his impressive, scale-breaking catch.
While Fuentes' catfish is a notable achievement, local lore speaks of an even more formidable resident. "Catzilla," a purported 50-pound catfish, was reportedly hooked by fisherman Justin Broussard earlier in the week. Officials stated that Broussard and a companion attempted to place the fish in a basket for release, but it violently thrashed and escaped back into the water.
Robert Hernandez, general manager of the Hesperia Recreation and Park District, noted that these significant catches have revitalized the local fishing community. He anticipates increased interest, potentially drawing individuals who are not typically anglers, all hoping to land the elusive "Catzilla."
The heightened activity is a welcome development for the park district, especially after Hesperia Lake Park reopened in April following a three-month closure due to severe damage from a Christmas Day downpour. The park was subsequently restocked with trout, but the recent catfish discoveries have become the primary attraction.
