Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown is urging the club to target Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as they seek to bolster their attacking options. With Tottenham reportedly unsatisfied with their current forward lineup, Mateta is seen as a proven Premier League talent who could be an impactful addition.
Brown highlighted that Mateta's contract situation at Selhurst Park could present a favorable opportunity for Spurs, suggesting they might be able to secure him for a reasonable fee. He believes Mateta's experience and goal-scoring record make him a strong candidate, especially if the club is looking for an upgrade on Dominic Solanke and Richarlison.
"Tottenham have been wanting to sign a striker this summer," Brown told Football Insider. "I think it’s clear at this point that they’re not entirely happy when you look at their current options. Are Dominic Solanke and Richarlison enough? They don’t think so."
He added, "So when you’re looking at which top-class strikers might be available, and already have that Premier League experience, you need look no further than Jean-Philippe Mateta. That contract situation is still a factor, and Spurs will believe they can get him on the cheap, even if Palace are reluctant to let him go."
Mateta isn't the only striker on Tottenham's radar, however. The club is also in advanced talks with Manchester City for Omar Marmoush, who has reportedly agreed to a move. Talks are progressing for a potential double deal that could also include winger Savinho, with a combined package estimated at £150 million.
Mateta offers a physical presence at 6ft 4in, with the ability to hold up play and compete aerially, fitting a more traditional No. 9 role. He has over 150 Premier League appearances, scoring 50 goals. Marmoush, on the other hand, provides more versatility, capable of playing centrally or out wide with explosive pace and off-the-ball movement, suiting a fluid attacking system.
