Oil Tanker Hijacked Off Yemen Linked to Iranian 'Shadow Fleet'

An oil tanker, the SIBU 1, hijacked by Somali pirates off the coast of Yemen, is reportedly linked to Iran's 'shadow fleet,' raising concerns about its operations and previous routes in the region.

Initial intelligence suggests the vessel, which flies the Eritrean flag, sent a distress signal approximately 136 nautical miles east of Mukalla before six armed individuals boarded and seized control. The pirates then steered the tanker towards the Somali coast.

According to maritime security sources cited by The New York Times, the tanker is suspected of being part of a clandestine network used to transport Iranian oil to global markets. The United States had previously imposed sanctions on the vessel in December, identifying it as connected to the Iranian 'shadow fleet,' which employs deceptive tactics to circumvent sanctions and move petroleum products.

Ship tracking data reveals that the SIBU 1 regularly transported fuel to the Houthi-controlled Ras Isa oil terminal. This pattern places its prior movements within a maritime supply network that prompts questions about the ultimate beneficiaries of these shipments.

The hijacking occurs amid a surge in maritime risks in the waters around Yemen and the Horn of Africa, with a resurgence of Somali pirate activity. Somali port officials stated that pirates are currently holding six vessels and over 100 crew members. While the European naval mission confirmed the tanker's crew is safe, the fate of approximately 20 crew members remains unclear, according to recent reports.

The incident coincided with the hijacking of another cargo ship, the LOTUS, which flies the Cameroonian flag. Somali officials reported that the LOTUS was carrying weapons from Turkey destined for Mogadishu. These developments highlight escalating complexities in maritime security off Yemen and the Horn of Africa, where sanctions-related oil transport networks intersect with piracy and security threats, significantly increasing risks for international trade in the area.
