US Affirms Support for Saudi Arabia, Yemen Against Houthi Threat

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government in confronting the threat posed by Iran-backed Houthi militias. This stance comes amidst ongoing military operations and escalating tensions near the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait, highlighting efforts to defend sovereignty and restore stability in Yemen.

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen issued a statement emphasizing that the United States stands firmly with Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government in countering the Houthi threat. The embassy underscored the right of both nations to defend their sovereignty and work towards restoring stability within Yemen.

Addressing the humanitarian dimension of the conflict, the U.S. Embassy attributed the large-scale displacement of Yemeni civilians to the actions of the Houthi militias. The statement indicated that over 200,000 Yemenis have been forced to flee their homes since September, with internally displaced persons opting to move away from Houthi-controlled areas.

This migratory pattern, according to the embassy's assessment, reflects the dire living conditions and suffering experienced by Yemenis in areas under Houthi control, characterizing the situation as one of injustice and hardship.

The American position emerges at a time of heightened concern over the repercussions of military escalation on regional security, particularly around the Bab el-Mandeb, a crucial global trade route. Continued Houthi threats are seen as exacerbating the already complex security and humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the broader region.
