US Pushes SpaceX to Block Starlink Access for Houthis, Hezbollah

The United States is pressing SpaceX to disable its Starlink satellite internet service for terminals suspected of reaching the Houthi militia in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon. This action highlights an escalating conflict over control of satellite communications and their potential military and political applications.

According to a Reuters report citing former US officials, both the Trump and Biden administrations have requested that SpaceX identify devices believed to have been acquired by these groups through intermediaries and to cease service to them. The concern is that these terminals could be used for operational communications and coordination.

Sources confirmed that some terminals have indeed been deactivated, though this does not signify a complete service blockage for all suspected devices linked to the Houthis and Hezbollah. These measures are being implemented amid US concerns that Iran-backed armed groups may exploit satellite communication technologies, which provide connectivity beyond traditional networks.

Reuters noted that concerns regarding Hezbollah emerged during confrontations in October 2023, and similar concerns about the Houthis resurfaced in 2024, coinciding with US military operations against the group in Yemen. The situation is further complicated by US efforts to expand Starlink access within Iran, aiming to circumvent internet restrictions and facilitate information flow, a move that contrasts with the push to block its adversaries.

These developments indicate a shift in satellite internet from a commercial service to a tool of influence in international conflicts. User connectivity is now contingent upon decisions made by a private company, which itself is subject to governmental pressure related to national security and foreign policy considerations.
