FC Barcelona has announced the signing of defender Joao Cancelo on a free transfer, securing his services until June 30, 2029.
The Portuguese international terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal to facilitate his return to Camp Nou. Cancelo brings extensive experience, having previously played for Barcelona on two loan spells, including the latter half of the 2023-24 season, where he contributed to Hansi Flick's squad retaining the La Liga title.
Cancelo's career has spanned Portugal, Spain, and Italy, prior to his move to Manchester City in 2019. He was subsequently loaned to Bayern Munich and then Barcelona for the 2023-24 campaign before his brief stint with Al Hilal in 2024.
The acquisition of Cancelo adds to Barcelona's summer transfer activity, which has also seen the arrivals of Rodri, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi. The Catalan club remains actively seeking a striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Negotiations for Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez were reportedly unsuccessful, prompting Barcelona to explore alternative targets.
Hansi Flick's team is scheduled to commence their La Liga campaign on Sunday with an away fixture against Elche.
